Four tips on how you can improve as a filmmaker
Here’s our breakdown of tips that will help you become a better filmmaker. Some you may already be doing, and that’s great! But there will be others you can add to the mix that will help skyrocket your filmmaking ability.
Write, write, write
Writing weekly is essential; writing multiple times a week will improve your scriptwriting in weeks. The most important thing to do is write your first draft out with your ideas in a free flow, then return and make adjustments.
This way, it gives you a fresh look at your script and allows you to see mistakes and spot places to improve the dialogue and story.
The more you write, the better you get. Practice makes perfect.
This can be seen as a death trap, but hear me out. There are a lot of great filmmakers on this channel, and most of them give generous feedback. They pay attention to your project and offer you helpful advice that will improve your film project.
Our favourite is the r/Filmmakers channel. When getting critique from people on the internet, we’ve found r/Filmmakers to provide constructive and in-depth feedback. Of course, you get the anomaly who just insult you, but it’s 1 in a million, so never fear being put on the shopfront and critiqued. It will do you a world of good and will help you tremendously in the long run.

Make a list
Make a list of some of the projects you want to film this year. You may not have finessed the script or even created the logline yet, but having it noted down will provide you with a purpose and some guidance.
Hey, it doesn’t even have to be a fully scoped feature film – you could just be shooting the local nature reserve capturing some shots of the animals to edit for fun.
This is still an improvement. It will help you improve your cinematic capabilities and improve your shot composition, your framing and much more.
You can then start to edit your material, maybe even do a little voiceover and then add it to your YouTube channel.
There is so much opportunity out there and so many small things you can do to get ahead of the curve and get to grips with being a filmmaker.
Enter a film festival
Entering into a film festival, seriously go ahead and enter one. Honestly, it’s refreshing, and you never know what can come out of it.
We’ve all got projects we’ve created or worked on sitting there that could be a hidden gem.
Some film festivals offer feedback from their judging panel, and this can often be gold dust. Scour the net and see what virtual or physical film festivals are out there that fit your genre.
Trust us, you’ll find one, and it will be worth it!
