Hello, one and all! Seb Jaeger here with an overview of where Filmstro’s at and where we’re headed. Maybe you’ve recently joined via AppSumo, or you’ve been with us for a while and you’re curious about our plans. Or you’re deciding whether to join us. Either way, this article is for you!
On our journey so far (5 years and counting) we have received a lot of feedback and many suggestions from our users and loyal customers. We’ve also received lots of questions on what we’re building and where we see our tools develop. So, I thought it’s about time to share some of that with you. This article aims to share:
- what you can expect from Filmstro NOW.
- what you can expect from Filmstro in the FUTURE.
What’s the current offering?
Filmstro is a boutique and exclusive music library offering royalty-free music cleared for all uses (from monetised YouTube all the way through to TV) in perpetuity and worldwide. For a monthly or annual subscription, you receive a license that allows for unlimited music from our library.
When we launched in 2016 we were actually the first production music company (aka stock music/audio) to offer a SaaS subscription. This has now been adopted by most other music library companies and we’re proud to have brought about this sea change in the industry; thereby significantly reducing the cost of music for filmmakers and other creative media professionals in the process. We’re passionate about rewarding our composers as well which is why we payout to each composer who has submitted music to our library every month, regardless of whether their music has been downloaded or used. We’re creators ourselves and understand what it’s like trying to make a living from our craft!
How do I access Filmstro’s music?
There are two ways to access the music that Filmstro’s library has to offer.
Download ready-made tracks: The first is simply by browsing the website and downloading an unlimited number of tracks. These are ready-made tracks like in any other production music library and feature high-quality, professionally-recorded soundtracks by our roster of talented composers worldwide.
Create custom soundtracks: The second way to access the music is by downloading our software from our product page. This allows you to customise each track. There are two solutions for this:
Standalone App for Mac & PC
One is our standalone application that works on PC and Mac and allows for each track in our library to be customised (using 3 powerful and intuitive sliders) to match your edit more closely. You can create ‘soundtrack only’ sessions inside our App or import a video (in mp4 format) and adjust the music to the picture. There are tutorials and quick start guides on our YouTube.
Plugins for NLEs (Adobe & Apple)
The second flavour is as a plugin for Adobe Premiere Pro (Mac & PC) and Apple’s Final Cut Pro X. To run these plugins requires the installation of our standalone App first, as this is the application that manages the music downloads that are then made available inside the plugins. There are tutorials on how to install and use these plugins on our Youtube.
What are the current limitations?
Filmstro was created using web technologies, so there are instances when you might experience performance issues while using Filmstro if you also have a browser open on your workstation and are doing other simultaneous tasks that are using browser-based tech, such as browsing the internet. We recommend using Filmstro while closing other applications to maximise its efficiency.
What else can I do to make Filmstro the best it can be?
We have found that working ‘scene-by-scene’ in a project is best. In other words, don’t import your feature-length video into Filmstro and expect it to create a feature-length soundtrack made up of multiple music cues. It won’t! Instead, load in a scene of a few minutes (under 5 minutes is recommended) and then choose one music track to work on to create that perfect music cue for that scene. The export options allow for soundtrack-only export, so you can assemble all of the cues in your NLE for post later.
What is Filmstro best at?
Our software is primarily a soundtrack creation solution. Using the soundtrack-only option inside our App and creating 1 soundtrack is what we’re confident you’ll enjoy and get a fantastic result from.
How do I work with video and music at the same time?
We would strongly recommend using Filmstro as a plugin inside Adobe Premiere or Final Cut to benefit from those program’s video playback capabilities, while at the same time harnessing the soundtrack potential of Filmstro.
I don’t want to have to download lots of music in-App before I can listen to it and edit it!
Currently, there is no shortcut. However, this is where our future plans come in! Once you have a subscription with us and an active license, you will be entitled to every single update and all new music. This means that what we’re building for the future will be available to you at no extra cost.
What are Filmstro’s plans for 2021/2022?
In a nutshell, we want to improve performance across all products. 1. For the App(s) this will involve a refactor of the code for the software.
2. For the website this will involve moving the content delivery to a more powerful solution.
3. For a new streamlined solution we’re currently planning a potential browser-based product as per our public roadmap.
How can I get involved and shape the future of this tool?
